Deepfakes: A Defamatory Dilemma

Abhyankar Panth, LLB (Hons), Bennett University

ABSTRACT

Deepfakes are a modern technology that use deep learning and artificial intelligence to fabricate sounds and visuals by using a collection of recorded sounds and pictures as a database. This technology presents an inherent danger considering the rise of misinformation, this subject has been debated to a large extent already. However, there has also been a trend of using this technology for satire and parody especially in the west. In these situations, would the use of such technology constitute defamation or is it protected? Would it yield any benefit to protect such expression? These are the subjects explored within this paper.
