ABSTRACT
Interfaith marriage, sometimes called a "mixed marriage", is marriage between spouses professing different religions. The objective of this research is to find out whether people from different religions can marry, to investigate the main challenges faced by inter-religious marriage, to analyze inter-religious marriage will reduce stereotypes, to examine inter-religious marriage gives cross cultural competency. The research method followed is empirical research. The data is collected through a questionnaire and a sample size is 200 respondents. Convenient method is adopted in the study to collect the data. The samples were collected from in and around Chennai. The independent variables are age, gender, educational qualifications, occupations and marital status of the respondents. The dependent variables are to find out whether people from different religions can marry, the main challenges faced by inter-religious marriage, inter-religion marriage will reduce stereotypes, and inter-religious marriage gives cross cultural competency. The researcher used the bar charts and Chi-Square test to analyze the data collected. The findings of this research shows that most of the respondents are supporting inter-religious marriage gives cross cultural competency and it will reduce stereotypes. Although marrying into a different religion is a matter of choice for an adult, there are certain issues regarding the same. The child born out of the wedlock will be a legitimate child and shall have the inheritance rights to the estate of his/ her father. The child will have the right to choose any one of the religions. Mostly the child will be given privileges based on the religion between the spouse i.e., the religion which has more reservation compared to the reservation for his/her spouse.
