Acid Attack Laws: A Dearth In Stringency

Dhanvi Joshi, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, Gujarat

ABSTRACT

The nation has witnessed an increasing number of acid attacks in the past few years. The author, by means of this long article, expresses concern for the same along with analyzing various factors provoking the said offence including, political rivalry, property disputes, refusal of sexual advances, marriage, dowry and so on. This is followed by a detailed examination of legislative measures which endeavour to protect society against such a heinous act. However, the laws in the country are not stringent enough to protect society, let alone provide remedies to the victims. The conditions of victims are antagonising since most of them are not financially capable of paying the expenses of hospitals and our victim compensation schemes are unable to serve well. The author provides recommendations which would aid in improving the present conditions and promote the meticulous administration of justice in society.
