ABSTRACT

This research explores the development and implications of an AI-based alimony calculator utilizing fuzzy logic within the Indian legal framework. The study addresses the problem of subjectivity and inconsistency in alimony determinations in Indian family courts. By employing a fuzzy inference system, this paper aims to model the discretionary aspects of judicial reasoning in alimony awards. The methodology involves the design of a rule-based fuzzy system using variables such as the duration of marriage, income disparity, presence of children and standard of living. The proposed system offers a semi-automated tool to assist legal professionals in estimating reasonable maintenance amounts. Results from test scenarios demonstrate that the fuzzy model can generate outputs aligning with general judicial trends, though not intended to replace judicial discretion. The paper concludes with a discussion on the benefits, limitations and ethical considerations of deploying AI in sensitive family law matters.
