Tamilalagan N A, Tamil Nadu National Law University (A State University established by Act No. 9 of 2012) Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India

ABSTRACT

On an international level, this project looks at how bonded labour persists in India’s agricultural sector in the face of legal prohibitions. In rural areas bonded labour, one of the worst forms of exploitation, persists to this day using economic vulnerability, caste discrimination and a lack of awareness about one's legal rights. The research links the continuation of this to socio- economic disparities; landlessness; and the interaction of local power structures. It also assesses the utility of theBonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, of 1976, and identifies problems in the implementation of the Act. The project seeks to provide actionable reforms and policy measures towards the end of eradication of bonded labour and ensuring dignified work conditions for the agricultural labourers of India.
