Introduction
Maritime casualties are often caused by the negligence of the captain or crew. It can also be caused by bad weather. Often they lead to serious injury, illness and even death. The causes of accidents are as diverse as the ships on which they occur. Seafarers injured on the job are protected by the Maritime Law and the Jones Act. These laws provide for medical examinations, treatment, rehabilitation, room and board, and loss of wages for injured workers. The laws of the sea also include personal injury suffered by passengers. This is called due diligence.
The worlds shipping industry has evolved from simple maritime trade to an intricate network of highways and waterways. It's about delivering billions of dollars in consumer goods to customers across the country and around the world. The Maritime Industry Foundation reports that around 1.2 million people are currently employed in the industry. This is great news for our economy, but it also means that there are 1.2 million opportunities for workers to be injured on the job.
