An Analysis Of Minimum Wages In India

Shivangi Gupta & Astha Goel, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun

ABSTRACT

Legislators have recently worked to streamline the various labor-related laws that are already in place in India. The Code on Wages, 2019 is one such piece of legislation that has received the approval of the Parliament. Four laws – the Payment of Wages Act, 1936, the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965, and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 – are replaced by the Code on Wages Act, 2019. Legislators claim that efforts have been made to incorporate the “unorganised sector” of the labour force, which was previously exempted from the application of minimum wages. This article talks about the concept of Minimum Wages in India with the relevant provisions mentioned under the Code on Wages, 2019.
