ABSTRACT

The advent and proliferation of cancel culture pose a multidimensional threat to the fundamental values of freedom of speech and expression in the fast changing digital age. Cancel culture, which is defined by social exclusion and public criticism that is frequently made possible by social media platforms, has emerged as a significant influence on modern discourse. Critical questions are raised by this phenomenon about how it affects people's willingness to freely express a range of opinions, how social media platforms can either amplify or lessen its effects, and what the long-term consequences will be for public discourse, idea diversity, and democratic values. As cancel culture gets more and more popular, it is necessary to look into the complex dynamics that surround its expression and consider how it affects the exercise of free speech. Furthermore, social media sites' dual roles as cancel culture's initiators and moderators call for a thorough analysis of their influence on the conversation around free speech. Thus, the main research question this study aims to answer is: How does cancel culture affect freedom of speech and expression in the digital age, and what are the effects on people and society as a whole, especially with regard to the diversity of opinions and democratic values? This study attempts to add significant insights to the continuing conversation on the fine line that exists between accountability and the maintenance of an open and varied public sphere by dissecting cancel culture and its effects.
