INTRODUCTION
The First Information Report (FIR) provides the legal basis for the police to begin an investigation into a cognizable offense. Cognizable offence is defined in section 2(3) of the CrPC which means that cases in which police officer can arrest the person without warrant in accordance with the rules established in first schedule. Fir is considered as a legal complaint that can be filed by an individual who has the knowledge of a criminal offence.
OBJECT OF FIR
The main purpose of the First Information Report from the view of the victim is to set the criminal law in motion, and from the point of view of the police officers is to collect information about the alleged criminal activity to be able to take suitable steps to trace and bring to book to guilty.
The FIR in a criminal case is extremely vital and valuable piece of evidence for the purpose ofcorroborating the oral evidence adduced at the trial. The object of insisting upon prompt lodging FIR is to obtain prior information regarding the circumstances in which the crime was committed, the names of actual culprits and the parts played by them as the names of eye- witness.
