ABSTRACT
Pollution, deforestation, and climate change are the most pressing environmental problems in South Asia, which is home to more than one-fifth of the world's population. Even though this regional governance now includes a number of environmental legislations, their efficacy has varied. The current study compares the environmental laws of the major South Asian nations—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, discussing their strengths and limitations and types of implications for sustainable development in the region. The challenges that commonly plague environmental governance such as enforcement challenges, lack of public buy-in, and resource constraints are discussed as well as policy recommendations for the region to improve environmental governance and cooperative policy in the region.
