Karma Choki, Lovely Professional University

ABSTRACT

The entire world was already in chaos trying to fight covid-19 and just when a little ray of hope of the world returning to normal was felt, Russia started an attack on Ukraine. The biggest concern of this non stop attack is the lives of the innocent citizens and their properties that are being put into ruins. At this critical moment, the question that strikes in the mind of every person is why the rest of the world is not doing anything? Why are the international laws not providing the deserved protection to the civilians who have no role in the war? The strength and role of the international laws have been questioned. Hence, this paper has been written to critically determine how this war has resulted in violation of the rights provided to the civilians under the International Humanitarian Law.

Keywords: Russia-Ukraine war, civilians, international humanitarian law, violation of international humanitarian law
