ABSTRACT:

Responsibility to Protect (R2P) was developed to reaffirm the duties of many stakeholders to end repressive situations and maintain global peace and security. As a result, R2P holds that each state has a responsibility to defend its citizens, and that obligation can also extend to the rest of the world. The international community has taken attempts to incorporate the idea of R2P into the international legal structures, despite the UN Charter making no specific mention of it. In light of this, the major goal of this research paper is to understand the historical development of the idea of R2P and to examine how the international community has utilised it to address various crisis situations. Consequently, the conceptual foundation of R2P and its historical development will be covered initially in this essay. The following section of this essay focuses on the idea of responsibility to protect in light of the crisis between the Ukraine and Russia. Moreover, it examines the role of the international community and its responsibility in relation to R2P in the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Keywords: R2P, Interventions, The UNSC, Resolutions, Atrocities.
