ABSTRACT
Geographical Indications (GIs) are a crucial aspect of intellectual property rights, particularly in regions with rich cultural heritage and unique agricultural products. In India, the protection of GIs has gained significant attention, especially in states like Sikkim, where traditional knowledge, biodiversity, and unique agrarian practices are prevalent. Sikkim, a small Himalayan state in Northeast India, is known for its organic farming and diverse agro-climatic conditions, which produce some of the most distinctive and high-quality products in the country. The protection of these products under the GI regime not only preserves their uniqueness but also offers significant socio-economic benefits to the region.
This article explores the socio-economic benefits of GI protection in Sikkim, focusing on its impact on local communities, the economy, and the preservation of cultural heritage. It delves into the specific cases of Sikkim’s GI registered products, such as Sikkim Large Cardamom and Dalle Khursani, and discusses the broader implications of GI protection for the state’s development.
