ABSTRACT
Immigration has long been a critical issue for India, given its extensive land borders with several neighboring countries and the socio-political complexities associated with cross-border movements. This research paper explores the impact of immigration law reforms, particularly the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) of 2019 and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), on India’s border security and crime patterns. The study delves into the historical evolution of immigration policies, the rationale behind recent reforms, and their implementation challenges. It highlights how these reforms have led to significant changes in India's border security strategies, including the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies, strengthening of the Border Security Force (BSF), and increased international cooperation for border management. However, the paper also critically examines the unintended consequences of these reforms, such as social unrest, communal tensions, and allegations of discrimination. The enforcement of documentation requirements has posed difficulties for marginalized communities, often resulting in exclusion and vulnerability. Furthermore, the reforms have had a mixed impact on crime prevention, reducing instances of human trafficking and illegal immigration in some areas while simultaneously fueling document forgery, smuggling, and insurgency in others. Through an analysis of legal cases, crime data, and real- world incidents like the Pahalgam and Rajouri attacks, the research illustrates the complex link between immigration policies and national security outcomes. The study concludes that India's future immigration framework must strike a careful balance between safeguarding national interests and upholding constitutional and international human rights obligations. Only an integrated, inclusive, and sustainable approach can ensure that immigration reforms contribute positively to India's security, social stability, and global standing.
