ABSTRACT
This research paper examines the economic implications of Geographical Indication (GI) status on Muzaffarnagar jaggery (Gur), a traditional sugarcane product from Uttar Pradesh, India. Granted GI status in March 2023, Muzaffarnagar jaggery has emerged as a case study for understanding how legal protections under India’s GI framework enhance market advantages, boost rural economies, and promote export potential. The paper explores the interplay between GI-induced legal safeguards, economic growth, and market competitiveness, drawing on qualitative and theoretical analyses supplemented by available data on similar GI products in India. Key findings suggest that GI status elevates product value, fosters employment, and strengthens export markets, as evidenced by the first export of 30 metric tons to Bangladesh in March 2025. However, challenges such as enforcement inefficiencies, awareness gaps, and competition from non-GI jaggery persist. The study concludes that while GI status offers significant economic opportunities, its full potential depends on robust implementation, stakeholder collaboration, and global marketing strategies. Recommendations include enhancing enforcement mechanisms, promoting consumer awareness, and leveraging digital platforms for market expansion.
