– Kurt Cobain

ABSTRACT

It is with this intention that this article is written in order to expound the two- fold nature of drugs – their centrality in medicine and the legal and regulatory structure on their abuse under Indian law. It investigates the therapeutic effects of pharmaceutical drugs and how these drugs are of utmost importance in the treatment and control of different diseases. Simultaneously, the article unravels the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 with a view of stopping drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking. The role of the key regulating bodies like the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is discussed, revealing the mechanisms and methods of enforcement as well as control. In addition, the article reviews government campaigns and awareness campaigns conducted against substance abuse and the responsible utilization of medicinal drugs. This article attempts to strike a balance between the medical need of drugs and the compulsion of legal and social control.
