ABSTRACT
“If we all are uniformly civil, would there be any need for a Uniform Code?”
The Uniform Civil Code is a proposed set of laws in India that seeks to replace the personal laws prevailing in a country based on religious customs with a common set of laws that govern all citizens, regardless of their religion. This Article analyzes the historical background of the code. One rule, One Nation can sound good but it needs a lot of effort and may cause harm to the common people's beliefs. A Uniform Civil Code will be the backbone of the country which ensures everyone’s freedom and removes inequalities. Uttarakhand is going to be the first state in India to implement UCC. Many of us are in favor of UCC while most of us are constantly against the same. The controversy was started during the Independence era. India is a secular country, all the citizens have the right to practice, propagate, and profess any religion but there is a fact that secularism is a myth. The constitution of India had provided the citizens of India some Fundamental Rights to live freely in such a diverse country. The Article offers a comprehensive understanding of the Uniform Civil Code through a comparative lens, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks concerning minority rights, women empowerment, and social cohesion.
