Unveiling The Dark Reality: Understanding Custodial Rape

Naina Garg, Lovely Professional University

ABSTRACT

Custodial rape is a serious and abhorrent kind of sexual violence that happens when those in positions of trust or authority abuse their authority to rape or sexually assault those under their care. Custodial rape is a grim reality that is explored in this article along with its description, dynamics, and effects on survivors. It draws attention to the issues that led to this horrible crime, such as institutional apathy, power abuse, a lack of responsibility, and a silence- promoting culture. The essay highlights the urgent need for all-encompassing action to address custodial rape, including legislative changes, institutional accountability measures, survivor assistance programmes, and awareness- raising campaigns. We may work towards a culture where incarcerated rape is categorically denounced and survivors find peace and healing by increasing awareness, offering assistance, and fighting for justice.
