ABSTRACT

This paper critically examines the role of Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) in facilitating political empowerment among women in India. Through an extensive review of secondary data, including government reports, scholarly articles, NGO analyses, and policy frameworks, the research evaluates how institutional mechanisms, reservation policies, training programs, socio- cultural factors, and political participation contribute to or hinder women’s empowerment at the grassroots level (Kabeer, 1999; Rai, 2011). The study identifies significant progress due to legislative reforms such as the 73rd Constitutional Amendment, while also highlighting persisting challenges including patriarchal resistance, capacity deficits, and limited access to resources (Government of India, 1993; Jayal, 2006). Policy recommendations are proposed to strengthen women’s agency, decision- making authority, and leadership roles within Panchayat Raj Institutions.
