A Research On The Dearth Of Women Directors On Corporate Boards

Akash Chatterjee & Moulinath Moitra, Amity University Kolkata

ABSTRACT

A company is nonexistent tangibly, but manifests with the actions of its management – the body corporate is largely governed by the body of directors called the board. The board represents the intentions of the company as it steers it towards accomplishing action plans and hence any dysfunctionality of the board implies a weakness that should be cured for the greater good. The seeming absence and less proportion of female representation in the boards is one such aspect. Gender-based attributes of the board has been the subject matter of a number of corporate studies due to its linkage with the overall performance of the company. Research on board gender diversity reveals director characteristics, firm size, the board size, board diversity, industry, type of ownership, customer base, and social and cultural characteristics as the factors that influence the representation of female directors on corporate boards.
