A Study On LGBT+ Community In India

ABSTRACT


The LGBT+ community in this culturally sensitive country India has come a long way to attain the current status they have in India and the paper elucidates the current situation in India, the people’s perspective on the LGBT+ community in India and the steps taken by the government to provide the minority LGBT+ community a status in the Indian society. The paper also tries to make the readers become aware of the various aspects of LGBT. Hence, the objective of this paper is to understand respondents’ attitude towards the LGBT+ Individuals and to analyse the difference between the respondents’ agreeability level on the Supreme Court’s ruling on the section 377 of IPC and education qualifications of the respondents. Descriptive research method is adopted to understand the characteristics of the population. Convenience sampling method is used to collect data. The sample size is 252. Questionnaire is used as the research instrument to collect the data. Survey is conducted among the Chennai population. Research tools are Graphs, percentage analysis, frequency table, Chi-square, t test, ANOVA and Correlation. SPSS software is used for carrying out the analysis. From this study, it can be deduced that people aware of the concept of LGBT and homosexuality and that people have a positive attitude towards the LGBT+ community in India. It can be noted that India is lacking LGBT+ specific legislation and the current Legislations are not inclusive of the rights of the LGBT+ community. So, it can be concluded that the current need of the hour to bring more LGBT+ specific and inclusive legislations by the government to upbring the community.
