Access To Justice Through Technology: Analyzing The Promises And Pitfalls Of Digital Legal Integration

ABSTRACT
The convergence of technology and law has catalyzed transformative possibilities for broadening access to justice, yet the integration of digital tools into legal systems presents a complex terrain of both opportunity and substantial risk. This manuscript undertakes a comprehensive examination of how digital legal integration encompassing online dispute resolution mechanisms, artificial intelligence-assisted legal aid platforms, electronic filing systems, and virtual court proceedings ostensibly holds the promise of dismantling longstanding structural barriers rooted in geographic distance, financial constraint, and informational asymmetry. By democratizing legal information and streamlining procedural access, technology appears to position itself as a potential equalizer within traditionally hierarchical justice systems. However, this analysis contends that such transformative promises remain contingent upon the presence of critical structural prerequisites that remain unevenly distributed across populations and geographies. The digital divide, algorithmic bias embedded in legal decision-support tools, erosion of due process protections in automated adjudication systems, and the systematic marginalization of digitally illiterate populations represent critical pitfalls that risk deepening existing inequalities rather than remedying them. Drawing on comparative analytical frameworks from jurisdictions including India, the United Kingdom, and the United States, this manuscript examines the substantial gap between technological ambition and ground-level implementation realities.
Ultimately, this manuscript argues that technology, absent deliberate policy intervention and inclusive design principles, cannot reasonably be assumed to advance justice as a neutral force. Meaningful digital legal integration demands the adoption of a rights-centred approach that foregrounds equity, transparency, and accountability at every stage of technological deployment and implementation. The study concludes that innovative approaches to justice delivery must be carefully calibrated to ensure that efficiency gains do not come at the cost of fundamental fairness and the substantive realization of access to justice as a constitutional right.
