ABSTRACT
This research paper explores the environmental challenges posed by the fast fashion industry, focusing primarily on water pollution, carbon emissions, and textile waste management. Fast fashion, characterized by rapid production and frequent consumption, significantly impacts the environment, especially in countries like India where the textile industry is extensive. The paper critically examines the existing legal framework, including the Environment Protection Act (1986), Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act (1974), and the Hazardous Waste Management Rules (2016), highlighting their gaps and the need for robust enforcement. International frameworks, such as the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the Paris Agreement, are discussed to identify potential improvements in India's approach. A survey of 60 consumers aged 20-30 reveals limited awareness of environmental regulations, emphasizing the need for stricter laws and sustainable practices. The study also explores sustainable alternatives like the circular economy and innovative textile technologies. Recommendations focus on integrating global best practices, strengthening regulatory mechanisms, and fostering consumer awareness for a more sustainable fashion future.
