ABSTRACT

The press council of India, a statutory body and autonomous body under which entire print media industry comes. The whole print media of India comes under the purview of the press council. The council is entrusted with the mission of acting as a supervisory body over print media and maintaining the highest possible levels of journalistic veracity and conduct. The council is headed by chairman, Retired Judge of the apex court, that is Supreme Court. Twenty members are nominated by the Recognized press agencies and organization from the media as members to the Press Council India. Eight other members are nominated to the Press Council India by the Sahitya Academy Union Parliament, University Grants Commission and Bar Council of India.

One would make up that a Council is entrusted with absolute power to regulate the media would enjoy enormous power. But regrettably, Press Council of India has no power to its credit except that of scolding and censuring which is plagued with imprecision, sensationalism and corruption.

Press Council of India’s ability to take action against an earring report or newspaper concerned is limited and only extents up to censuring, warning and admonishing. Press Council of India is more or less plays an advisory role in media industry. It is for the parties to adhere to it. But unfortunately, may newspaper be including the biggest one has ignored the Press Council of India directives.

In this article we are going to discuss the need for understanding the importance of press council and the effective administration inside the organization.
