ABSTRACT
This paper endeavours to provide a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted ethical, legal, and social implications of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the decision-making processes of the legal system. While the utilization of AI in the legal domain has the potential to enhance accuracy and efficiency, promote better access to justice, and optimize routine legal tasks, it is not without challenges. One of the foremost challenges is the prospect of perpetuating bias and discrimination. The use of AI in legal decision-making may unintentionally reinforce extant disparities, further marginalizing already vulnerable populations. Moreover, the increasing reliance on AI raises complex questions regarding accountability, transparency, and the delegation of crucial decision-making to machines. Who is ultimately responsible for decisions made by an AI system? How can the decision-making processes of AI be audited and scrutinized? These and other critical issues necessitate a robust legal and ethical framework to ensure that the use of AI in legal decision-making is non-discriminatory, transparent, and accountable.
This paper aims to explore the ethical, legal, and social implications of AI in legal decision-making, examining the challenges and opportunities presented by the integration of AI in the legal system. The paper surveys existing legal and ethical frameworks and proposes solutions to mitigate the potential risks of AI in legal decision-making. Through this analysis, the paper aims to foster a more informed public dialogue and promote responsible and effective deployment of AI in the legal domain that ensures fairness, accountability, and justice for all.
