ABSTRACT

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was established by the Indian government in 2010. The NGT is a "quasi-judicial" organization that only handles environmental related civil disputes. Two earlier attempts to establish green courts in India existed before NGT. Both the National Environment Appellate Authority Act (NEAA) and the National Environment Tribunal Act (META) were enacted in 1995 and 1997, respectively. The NGT, however, became a reality in 2010 and is now the most successful environmental court. NGT has resolved numerous environmental issues since its establishment and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all directions. This page explains the rationale behind the NGT's founding, the selection process of the judges, and the judgments rendered by these tribunals.
