ABSTRACT
For any system of governance to thrive in its changing environment, evolution is a must. Police, policing and systems and methods of police governance too, are subject to constant change in every sphere, from the way crimes are purported, to who carry them out. This demanded for an upgradation in the police’s methods of governance which led to the development and adaptation of e-governance via technology-led advancements. This shift from only physical or manual methods to more conveniently and remotely accessible methods has been monumental. The present-day scenario where technology is overtaking the world, administration can also be made better with emulation of such practices in the police to citizen and police to police communication and interaction. Along with this, the increase in online crime and other security concerns, it has become all the more imperative for a new-edge and robust technology to be put into use so as to cut costs and multiply agility. However, such adaptation may not be as smooth in practice as it sounds in theory. This article aims to examine the roots and development of e-governance in police administration in India and its implications. It seeks to analyse how well information technology has been used by the police in India, to make their internal operations (with the government) as well as external operations (with the public at large) more efficient and effective.
