ABSTRACT
Women's empowerment is an essential component of constitutional democracy, sustainable development, and social justice. It encompasses the process of enhancing women's political, economic, social, educational, and legal status, enabling them to exercise equal rights and participate fully in all spheres of life. The Constitution of India guarantees equality before the law and prohibits discrimination based on sex while permitting affirmative measures for the advancement of women. Over the years, Parliament has enacted several gender-based laws to protect women from violence, discrimination, exploitation, and workplace harassment. The judiciary has also played a transformative role by expanding constitutional protections through progressive interpretation of Fundamental Rights. Despite these developments, significant challenges remain, including gender-based violence, economic inequality, workplace discrimination, unequal access to education and healthcare, and underrepresentation in decision-making institutions. This article critically analyses the constitutional framework, international obligations, and statutory measures relating to women's empowerment in India and evaluates the effectiveness of gender-based laws in achieving substantive equality.
