ABSTRACT
This paper examines through an intersectional lens the unionization of sex workers in India, analyzing how differences such as caste, religion, gender identity and regional differences create barriers and strategies for collective organizing. This study also highlights the intersecting systems of oppression that result in creation of barriers for various sex worker groups while also inspiring creative and impactful organizing solutions, drawing on available literature and case studies of well-known organizations of sex workers. The findings reflect that effective unionization efforts specifically address multiple aspects of marginalization by forming coalitions across identity lines, implementing inclusive governance structures and more. This analysis provides a broader perspective of labour organizing in unorganized or informal sectors and at the same time emphasizes the significance of these intersectional approaches in building persistent worker movements of marginalized groups.
