Jhanvi Goel, UPES SOL, Dehradun

ABSTRACT

The 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia has triggered a global debate on the effectiveness of international law in deterring as well as responding to aggression. It serves as an eloquent example of the complex convergence between the armed conflict and international law. This research paper delves into the multi-faceted impact of international legal norms by making a thorough analysis with the established principles of international law, identifying the violations that occurred in response to the invasion and assessing the accountability mechanisms surrounding international law. This study aims to do a comprehensive analysis of the legal outlook surrounding the given conflict. This paper also examines key areas like state sovereignty, territorial integrity and the prohibition of use of force particularly in the light of the invasion by Ukraine. This research will not only help in understanding the impact that Russia-Ukraine war holds on international law but will also deal with the intricacies of the challenges posed by the powerful state actors in resolving the conflict as well as the pivotal role played by the international organisations in the process.
