Vaibhav Sharma, Bennet University

ABSTRACT

Child labour is a pervasive problem in many countries, and India is no exception. The Indian Constitution recognizes the importance of protecting children's rights and well-being, and Article 24 is one of the provisions that addresses this issue. This research paper examines Article 24 of the Indian Constitution, which prohibits the employment of children in hazardous occupations. The paper provides an overview of the article, its historical development, and its significance in protecting children's rights and well- being. The paper also explores the challenges and limitations of the article, including enforcement issues and the root causes of child labour. Additionally, the paper discusses the criticism and controversies surrounding Article 24, including arguments against the ban on child labour and allegations of exploitation of child labour laws by businesses. The significance of Article 24 lies in its role in protecting children's rights and well-being. By prohibiting their employment in hazardous occupations, it ensures that children are not subjected to dangerous and exploitative working conditions that could harm their health and safety. It is also crucial in promoting their access to education and reducing poverty by preventing the exploitation of child labour for cheap labour. Overall, this paper highlights the ongoing importance of Article 24 in India's efforts to protect children's rights and the need for continued efforts to implement and enforce this constitutional provision.
