Vishaal Krishnan K, School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be) University, Bangalore

ABSTRACT

This research paper delves into the intricate ethical, legal, and societal dimensions surrounding theemerging field of germline gene editing. Focusing on the imperative to address hereditary diseases while respecting individual autonomy, the paper navigates through the complexities of genetic technologies and their implications for human health and well-being. Drawing from a rich tapestry of philosophical, legal, and bioethical perspectives, the paper examines the nuances of genome editing, distinguishing between somatic and germline interventions and exploring the ethical considerations inherent in altering the human germline.

The discourse extends to international legal frameworks and regulatory oversight, highlighting the need for clear guidelines and transparent decision-making processes to govern the responsible and equitable use of gene editing technologies. Through a comprehensive analysis of the potential benefits, ethical challenges, and societal implications of germline gene editing, the paper advocates for a principled approach that prioritizes human rights, promotes social justice, and fosters inclusive dialogue. Ultimately, it calls for a collective commitment to ethical conduct, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the pursuit of scientific innovation guided by a steadfast dedication to the well-being and dignity of all individuals.
