ABSTRACT
Censorship in China is a multifaceted and intricate phenomenon that has evolved over centuries, culminating in the formidable "Great Firewall." This paper aims to unveil the origins and purpose behind China's extensive censorship apparatus and to dissect the profound impact it wields on Chinese society.
Tracing censorship's roots to the Ming Dynasty, this paper explores how it has been used to control free thought and expression, laying the groundwork for contemporary practices. Then we breakdown the legislation and laws as well as the State organisations that propagate censorship. Delving into the depths of this system, we examine the systemic control it exerts over digital communication, dissecting its implications for free expression and access to information.
Next this paper studies the 'Great Firewall,' conceived to protect national integrity, which then emerged as a complex mechanism with a dual role of safeguarding China from external influences, while also suppressing the rights to information and privacy.
The paper concludes by unravelling the multifaceted impact of censorship on Chinese society with particular emphasis on women and other marginalized communities.
Through this exploration, we gain insight into the intricate tapestry of censorship in China, understanding its historical underpinnings, contemporary manifestations, and the far-reaching consequences it has on individuals, communities, and the broader fabric of society.
