ABSTRACT

The Bihar liquor ban, implemented in April 2016, aimed to address social, health, and economic challenges associated with alcohol consumption. This article provides an evaluation of the pros and cons of the ban, presenting arguments from both supporters and critics. The pros include social welfare, health benefits, women's empowerment, and potential economic implications. The cons highlight the growth of a black market, revenue loss, law enforcement challenges, impact on tourism and hospitality, increased crime rates, and social disruption. While the ban was intended to improve social welfare and public health, it faced criticism for its adverse consequences and unintended outcomes. The evaluation emphasizes the growth of a black market, loss of revenue, law enforcement challenges, and social disruption as significant issues associated with the ban. Moving forward, policymakers must carefully assess the ban's outcomes and consider alternative strategies to address alcohol-related concerns while minimizing unintended negative consequences.
