Brainstorming: Legitimacy Of Phrenology In Contemporary Forensics

Ishaan Deepak Joshi, MIT-WPU, Faculty of Law

ABSTRACT

Phrenology has been characterized as an observational physiological system. In practice, however, it is more comparable to psychology, as it gives a method for character and disposition study. The research is based on alterations in the size & shape of the surface of the brain, with a specific emphasis on the locations of the primary faculties that direct an individual's actions. While the science of phrenology seems to be no longer fashionable, the subject it intended to investigate and the goal it tried to achieve remain of great interest. There exists an ever-increasing need for a science or art committed to assessing human character and delineating the causes motivating behavior on various levels. The growth of psychology has offered new perspectives on the inner workings of the human person. The inducements to study oneself and hunt for the keys to open one's interior existence have had a significant impact on the public's attitude towards character assessment in general. Vilification may harm good causes, particularly if it piques the interest of the uneducated. Phrenology lost its early scientific prestige and fell into disfavor when serious scholarship failed to back it. However, many serious, though obscure, followers of the field maintained their investigations as best they could. This article aims at finding legitimacy of the old forensic field in contemporary times.
