Carceral Feminism: Is It The Solution?

Radhika Verma, Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai

ABSTRACT

The following essay on carceral feminism argues whether such a form of radical feminism is effective in restoring justice and actually resolving sexual violence against women. The author has analyzed the reasoning of carceral feminists and their modus operandi. While the author understands the cause behind their actions, it is argued that carceral feminism has proved to be of little help in providing justice to the victims of sexual violence or bringing about a change in the society. Depending upon incarcenation has not proved fruitful, rather it has raised questions on the actions of such feminists. The author has explained this through an example and thus established the ineffectiveness of carceral theory. Neverthless, the author has also counter argued and supported the rationale behind carceral feminism. There is no doubt that the emergence of carceral feminism was for certain reasons , but modern feminists need to adopt a different approach towards gendered violence.
