Child Sexual Abuse In India: A Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Review Of Prevention, Clinical Management, Forensic Evaluation, And Legal Protection Under The Protection Of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act

ABSTRACT
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a serious social and public health concern that continues to affect children across the world, including India. The consequences of such abuse extend beyond immediate physical harm, often resulting in long-term psychological, emotional, and social difficulties for survivors. Healthcare professionals, particularly pediatricians and frontline medical practitioners, play a vital role in the early identification of suspected abuse, comprehensive medical assessment, timely intervention, and referral for psychological and legal support. In response to the growing need for child protection, India enacted the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, which provides a comprehensive legal framework for addressing various forms of sexual offences against children. The Act mandates reporting of suspected cases, establishes child-friendly procedures for investigation and trial, and outlines standardized guidelines for medical examination and evidence collection. Effective implementation of these provisions requires healthcare professionals to possess adequate knowledge of clinical evaluation, forensic documentation, legal responsibilities, prevention strategies, and multidisciplinary management. Strengthening professional capacity and inter-agency coordination is essential for ensuring timely protection, rehabilitation, and justice for child survivors of sexual abuse.
