ABSTRACT
Since ages, bigamy was practiced very commonly in India but now our civil and criminal law does not allow bigamy anymore. The immoral practice of converting religion for the sake of contracting second marriage is still prevailing in India even after the strict laws have been enacted. Where a man indulged in adulterous relationships and extra-marital affairs are now better adopted the idea of conversion to gain a legal and moral back of a particular religion. This idea not just exploits women but also shows the evil nature of few men in our male dominated society. Conversion by a married non-muslim man just to fulfill his desire to have another wife is of doubtful religious validity and even where conversion seems to be genuine, it cannot be a “go flag” for indulging in bigamy by deserting the first wife in violation of Islam’s insistence on treating co-wives with unexceptional equality and equal justice. This harmful and unhealthy practice also attracts certain number of crimes in India. To control this practice, various suggestions are also made in this study.
