Introduction
Copyright is a legal concept that grants creators exclusive rights over their original works, including literary, artistic, musical, and cinematic creations. Copyright infringement occurs when these rights are violated through unauthorized use, reproduction, distribution, or display of the copyrighted material without the permission of the rights holder. In the digital age, copyright protection has become increasingly significant as the internet and digital technologies facilitate rapid creation, sharing, and consumption of content globally.
The digital revolution has transformed how content is created, distributed, and consumed. Advances such as digital cameras, editing software, and online platforms have democratized content creation, enabling individuals and organizations to produce and share creative works with unprecedented ease and reach. Simultaneously, digital distribution channels like streaming services and social media provide on-demand, borderless access to vast libraries of content, reshaping traditional media consumption patterns. However, this ease of access and replication also exposes copyrighted content to heightened risks of unauthorized use and piracy, threatening creators’ rights and revenues.
This paper aims to explore the multifaceted challenges posed by copyright infringement in the digital environment and to examine the evolving legal and technological frameworks designed to address these issues. The scope includes an analysis of traditional and digital copyright laws, international treaties, and the role of intermediaries in regulating online content.
The central thesis is that while the digital age presents unique and complex challenges to copyright enforcement such as global jurisdictional issues, ease of digital copying, and platform liability, it also offers innovative technological tools and legal reforms that can effectively safeguard creators’ rights and promote a balanced digital ecosystem.
