ABSTRACT
The Geographical Indication (GI) certification has emerged as a crucial tool in preserving the traditional textiles of Arunachal Pradesh, known for their rich cultural heritage and intricate craftsmanship. Indigenous communities such as the Apatani, Monpa, Adi, Nyishi, Galo, Tai Khamti, Idu Mishmi, and Tangsa have unique weaving traditions that are deeply tied to their spiritual beliefs, social customs, and lifestyle. These textiles, distinguished by their vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and symbolic motifs, serve as powerful representations of tribal identity.
The GI tag provides legal protection to these textiles, preventing imitation and ensuring that only authentic products originating from designated regions can bear the GI label. This protection is vital in safeguarding the cultural authenticity of the craft while enhancing its commercial value. With the GI certification, artisans gain access to broader domestic and international markets, attracting customers who value traditional, sustainable, and ethically produced textiles. This economic boost improves the livelihoods of local weavers and promotes continued practice of traditional weaving techniques.
Moreover, the GI tag encourages sustainable practices by promoting the use of organic fibers, plant-based dyes, and eco-friendly production methods. Textiles such as Tangsa, Tai Khamti, and Nyishi, recognized with GI status in recent years, highlight the environmentally conscious techniques employed by these communities. The certification also helps foster cultural pride, ensuring that younger generations continue to engage in traditional weaving practices.
The GI tag has further contributed to boosting tourism in Arunachal Pradesh, drawing visitors interested in exploring the region's rich textile heritage. This increased visibility has strengthened the cultural significance of these crafts while empowering artisans to preserve their skills and traditions. the GI certification of Arunachal Pradesh’s textiles plays a pivotal role in preserving heritage, promoting sustainable practices, and empowering local communities. By securing the economic and cultural value of these indigenous crafts, the GI status ensures that the rich textile legacy of Arunachal Pradesh thrives for future generations.
