ABSTRACT
There's no denying that social media has revolutionized communication, eclipsing traditional media. It empowers people to voice dissent, share facts, and debunk misinformation. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube allow users to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, pictures, and videos across vast networks. However, alongside its benefits, social media also presents significant challenges.
One major concern lies in our ability to handle the information overload. People often consume unverified content from text messages, Facebook posts, and tweets, potentially leading to harmful beliefs. Additionally, gender-based online harassment is a stark reality in the social media landscape.
This research paper focuses on the role of social media in exacerbating cybercrime and gender-based harassment within the Indian context. It argues that trivializing the negative effects of cybercrime through social media can have serious consequences. Furthermore, the study examines the limitations of current legal and administrative frameworks in curbing social media- related crimes in India. Finally, it emphasizes the need for robust policies and a clear roadmap to address these issues effectively.
