Cultivating The Future: Agriculture's Role In Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Dr. Sonika Ahlawat, Assistant Professor, Department of Legal Studies, Trinity Institute of Professional Studies, Dwarka, New Delhi

ABSTRACT

A core objective of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to ensure decent lives for all while preserving a healthy planet by 2030. However, many of the targets are likely to be missed, partly due to the lack of focus on human population growth. Agriculture stands at the heart of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, acting as a powerful catalyst for addressing global challenges such as poverty, hunger, climate change, and environmental degradation. At the forefront is SDG 2, which emphasizes the eradication of hunger, achieving food security, and advancing sustainable agricultural practices. The article underscores the interlinkages between agriculture and other SDGs, detailing how holistic strategies can achieve multiple objectives simultaneously.

Challenges such as climate-induced vulnerabilities, resource depletion, and socio-economic inequalities are analysed, with a focus on policy frameworks and technological innovations that can foster resilience and equity in agricultural systems. The role of digital tools, financial inclusion, and community-driven approaches in empowering farmers, particularly women and marginalized groups, is also explored. Finally, the article advocates for strategies for transforming agriculture and the role of stakeholders. By illustrating actionable pathways, it presents agriculture not just as a sector but as a transformative force that can shape a more equitable and sustainable future. This discussion underscores the imperative of reimagining agriculture in alignment with the SDGs, ensuring that it serves as a cornerstone of global efforts to achieve sustainable development by 2030.
