The coronavirus pandemic has put unprecedented strain on communities and families around the world, creating unique challenges for individuals and households. Unfortunately, one of the most concerning issues that has arisen from the pandemic is an increase in domestic abuse cases against women. Domestic violence (DV) has been a long standing issue long before the onset of COVID-19 and the lockdowns following the outbreak and the pandemic has only exacerbated matters related to domestic violence. There have been hardly any specific studies regarding the assessment of domestic violence during the lockdown, especially in India, where domestic violence was already a significant problem. This paper attempts to examine the scenario of domestic violence during COVID-19 in India, the repercussions it had on the women of this country as well as the suggest reforms in the legal system so as to ensure a safer environment for its citizens.
