Environment Protection Act: A Critical Study

Priyanjali Bharti, HPNLU

Introduction

In India, several legislations have been enacted in the past few decades which specifically deal with environmental matters. These legislations are in alignment with the globally recognised green principles which intend to promote the object of environmental conservation.1 Before understanding the aims and objective of the environment protection act we need to understand the reason behind enactment of such legislation. The main purpose of a law or any law for that matter is to regulate human conduct. Similarly the objective behind environmental jurisprudence in India or across the globe is to regulate human action in relation to environment. Every human activity be it agriculture, production, exploration, experimentation or any other action tends to affect the environment in one way or other.
