Laws And Judicial Contribution For Animal Rights In India

Ashish Sharma, The Law School, University of Jammu

ABSTRACT

Animal rights are recognized in almost all the countries in the globe and India is one of them. Animal rights in India are protected from the very beginning as the constitution of India has provisions that discuss about the rights of animals. The main aspect of this paper is to analyze the various laws, rules made by the government of India, time to time for protecting the interest of the animals and measures taken to control the cruel behaviour against the animals. Indian Penal Code, 1860 also has some provisions that protect the animals. An important aspect to explore in this context is how the Indian Judiciary takes stand in favor of animals and recognizes animals as legal entities and gives rights to them. Non Government Organizations also come forward to help and fight for the animal welfare.
