Leveraging Workers' Rights And Environmental Protection Principles In The Manufacturing Sector To Promote Sustainable Production And Employment

Ahaana Guleria, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Law University

ABSTRACT

The following paper attempts to direct the attention of policy makers, enforcement officers and those concerned with the goals of sustainable development, environmental protection and workers’ rights towards the imperative nature and necessity of incorporating ecologically viable methods of production instead of less sustainable ones to maximise production capabilities and employment capacity at exponential rates after a brief period of recovering from the short term costs associated with doing so. The paper adopts quantitative content analyses of data available in the public domain as well as inferential qualitative approaches resulting in a mixed methodology of research. This report concludes that existing frameworks concerning the two key stakeholders; i.e., workers’ and the environment must interact cohesively from the ground up to facilitate mutual growth, preservation and development via policy initiatives involving state authorities and internationally acclaimed organisations; including raising awareness, debunking apprehensions concerning the irrecoverable costs of using ecological production processes and enforcing laws towards furthering the conjoined causes of economic and environmental protection in industrial setups. This can be done by monitoring the use of economically efficacious and environmentally sustainable manufacturing methods by appointing state mandated officials to ensure such practices are being followed. The use of sanctions or injunctionary penalties towards those who do not comply and engage in practices violative of established norms can also promote proper implementation of these plans.
