ABSTRACT

Living as a paying guest (PG) in a metro city has become a popular housing choice for individuals seeking affordable and convenient accommodation. However, the paying guest sector in India operates in a largely unregulated manner, leading to concerns regarding safety, living conditions, and tenant rights. This article provides an overview of the unregulated paying guest sector, discussing the rise of PG accommodations, the lack of a regulatory framework, safety concerns, quality of living conditions, tenant rights and disputes, steps towards regulation, and recommendations for tenants. By highlighting the challenges and advocating for necessary reforms, this article aims to raise awareness and promote the development of a safer and more regulated environment for paying guest residents in India.
