ABSTRACT

The Indian judicial system, a cornerstone of the world's largest democracy, faces significant challenges such as case backlog, delays, and limited accessibility. These issues have spurred a wave of policy initiatives and political reforms aimed at revitalizing the system. This paper delves into these reforms, highlighting the transformative impact of digitization, particularly through the E-Courts Mission Mode Project and the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). These initiatives have modernized case management, enhanced transparency, and made justice more accessible to the public, thereby addressing long-standing inefficiencies. Furthermore, the promotion and integration of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms—such as arbitration, mediation, and conciliation—into the mainstream legal framework have provided effective alternatives to traditional litigation. The emerging field of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) represents a significant leap forward, offering a more flexible and accessible approach to resolving disputes, particularly in the digital era. These reforms are not merely incremental changes but signify a paradigm shift towards a more responsive and efficient judicial system. In addition to technological advancements, the paper will also explore recent legislative reforms aimed at improving the justice delivery system. These include amendments to existing laws, the introduction of new legal frameworks, and efforts to enhance the independence and accountability of the judiciary. By examining these multidimensional reforms, this paper will argue that India’s justice system is undergoing a significant transformation. Ultimately, these reforms aim to deliver justice that is not only timely but also accessible and fair, aligning the Indian judiciary with global standards of efficiency and transparency.
