ABSTRACT
Political graft is one of the major forms of corruption impacting the politics and functioning of the government of India. Political graft refers to corruption in the form of the abuse of public offices for making personal financial gains. This article examines political graft as a form of organized crime since it incorporates all the elements of organized crime, which include group activity, continuity, planning, profit motivation, and protection from political influences.
In this article, political graft in the Indian context has been analyzed with regard to its nature, major forms, such as bribery, procurement fraud, embezzlement, election corruption, and corruption in the use of public property. Apart from the above, analysis of international and domestic legal framework, such as Prevention of Corruption Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, and Benami Transactions Act have also been done.
Besides, the role played by various institutions like CBI, CVC, ED, ECI, CAG, and Judiciary in curbing corruption has been discussed. Moreover, the major challenges involved in curbing political corruption have also been identified in this article.
