ABSTRACT
This research examines the ever-growing legal challenges posed by Deepfake and Voice Cloning technologies within the Indian context. While these AI-driven technologies offer a wide array of benefits in various arenas such as entertainment and education, they simultaneously facilitate unprecedented risks if not regulated correctly. This paper, analyses the current regulatory framework in India, specifically the IT Act (2000), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (2023), DPDP Act, and the Copyright Act combined with an analysis of the best practices from international jurisdictions, including the US, China, UK, and Australia to cull out the best possible way to regulate this ever-growing field, in India. This paper argues for the urgent implementation of a dedicated, comprehensive legislation in India to safeguard democratic integrity and individual rights in the age of Deepfakes and Voice Cloning.
